The Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové, part of Charles University, was founded in 1945 by decree of President Edvard Beneš as the first newly established Czechoslovak university after World War II. Its creation was driven by the need to expand access to higher education and to rebuild the intellectual and professional base of the country after years of occupation. Thanks to the efforts of visionary doctors and professors such as Jan Bedrna and Antonín Fingerland, and the support of local authorities, the faculty quickly became a respected center of medical education and research in Eastern Bohemia.
In its early years, the faculty operated under challenging post-war conditions, yet it managed to combine teaching, scientific work, and hospital care with remarkable success. In 1951, it was briefly transformed into the Military Medical Academy, which, despite increased resources, limited academic freedom. In 1958, the faculty was restored to Charles University, marking the beginning of a new era of scientific progress and innovation. During the following decades, its clinics achieved major advances in surgery, neurosurgery, and dialysis treatment, including one of the first successful kidney transplants in Czechoslovakia.
The 1970s and 1980s were politically difficult times, yet the faculty continued to grow in scientific and clinical expertise. Its doctors contributed internationally, including in Kuwait, where they helped develop the country’s healthcare system. After 1989, the faculty regained full academic freedom, introduced studies in English, and expanded its international reputation. Since 1992, hundreds of international students have graduated in General Medicine and Dentistry, making the faculty a recognized destination for medical education in Central Europe.
Today, the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové ranks among the top medical institutions in the Czech Republic. It combines tradition with modern research, offering innovative programs, advanced facilities, and a global academic environment. The Medicine program at Charles University in Hradec Králové is a 6-year full-time program taught in English. It combines modern theoretical education with extensive hospital and clinical practice.
The tuition fee is 400000 CZK (apx. €16,448) per year.
🦷 Dentistry at Charles University in Hradec Králové
The Dentistry program at Charles University in Hradec Králové lasts 5 years and is conducted entirely in English. It focuses on practical training from the early years, preparing students for clinical work in international environments.
The tuition fee is 410000 CZK (apx. €16,859) per year.
The entrance exam for Charles University in Hradec Králové is conducted online and consists of two parts: a written test and an oral interview.
The written test
The written test evaluates the applicant’s knowledge of basic sciences, with a total of 60 points available:
– Biology – 25 points,
– Chemistry – 25 points,
– and Physics or Mathematics – 10 points.
It is a multiple-choice test, where each:
– correct answer is worth +1 point,
– no answer gives 0 points,
– and an incorrect answer also gives 0 points.
The use of dictionaries or reference tables is not allowed; applicants may only use a calculator and must present a valid passport (ID).
The oral interview
The oral interview is worth 40 points in total.
The first part (20 points): assesses the applicant’s ability to understand and analyze provided scientific and medical information, interpret data, and make decisions.
The second part (20 points): focuses on the applicant’s personal profile, including ethical and moral values, communication skills, teamwork, and cooperation.
The exam is held in English, and the application fee is 2,500 CZK (approximately 100 EUR).
The university organizes the entrance exam twice a year, usually around mid-May and early June, with the exact dates to be announced.
To apply for the Medicine or Dentistry program at Charles University in Hradec Králové, candidates must have completed secondary school.
Please note: the entrance examination can only be taken once per academic year.
In 2026, the entrance exams for Medicine and Dentistry at Charles University in Hradec Králové will take place on next dates:
1. 13 May 2026 (application deadline: 30 April 2026).
Application deadline: 2-3 weeks before the selected entrance examination date.
Students who wish to transfer from another university (and non-Eu candidates) should plan to take the exam as early as possible (preferably in March, April or max in May!), as additional time is needed to submit applications for subject recognition and credit transfers.
Each candidate can take the entrance exam for their chosen program (Medicine or Dentistry) only once per year.
The fee for taking the medical entrance exam is apx. €100.
Documents before entrance exam:
– Signed application form – the application must be completed electronically and then printed and signed. When selecting the program, choose “full-time, Master’s”, and then Dentistry or General Medicine.
– High school leaving certificate and final exam certificate – notarized copies with certified translations into Czech.
– Proof of payment of the application fee of 2500 CZK.
– A sheet of paper with your full name, email address, exam date, and phone number.
