Information about Faculty Medicine in Ostrava

1. general informations

The University of Ostrava is a relatively young but dynamically developing institution in the Czech Republic. Although it was officially founded on 28 September 1991, its roots date back to 1953, when a training college for future primary school teachers was established in the nearby town of Opava. In 1959, all teacher training programs in the region were merged into a single institution – the Pedagogical Institute in Ostrava, which in 1964 gained university status as the Faculty of Education. Over time, the university expanded its range of study programs and began placing a strong emphasis on scientific research and innovation.

A significant milestone in the university’s history was the creation of the Faculty of Medicine (Lékařská fakulta). Its origins can be traced to 1993, when the Medical-Social Faculty was established within the University of Ostrava. In 2008, it was divided into two separate units – the Faculty of Social Studies and the Faculty of Health Studies. In 2010, the latter was transformed into the Faculty of Medicine, which has since grown rapidly.

Today, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ostrava educates future doctors and medical professionals, combining a modern approach to teaching with practical training for work in healthcare. Despite its relatively short history, the faculty has earned a strong reputation thanks to flexible study programs, modern infrastructure, and close cooperation with regional medical institutions. As a result, Ostrava is becoming an increasingly recognized academic center in the Czech Republic, attracting students from abroad as well.

🩺 Medicine at University of Ostrava

The Medicine program at University of Ostrava is a 6-year full-time program taught in English. It combines modern theoretical education with extensive hospital and clinical practice.

The tuition fee is €12,000 per year.

3. exams & enrollment dates

To apply for the Medicine at University of Ostrava, candidates must have completed secondary school.

The entrance exam for the General Medicine program at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ostrava, is conducted online in a monitored examination environment using a camera-based system provided by Scio.

The scope of the exam reflects current secondary school curriculum standards and is based on published topics rather than a single set of recommended textbooks.

Each question has one answer considered the most correct, which will be treated as the only valid response during assessment.

The test covers three core science subjects: biology, chemistry, and physics. Candidates have 90 minutes to complete the exam, which consists of 90 questions in total – 30 from each subject. Each correct answer is worth 1 point. There are no multiple-choice questions with more than one correct answer and no negative marking.

The maximum possible score is 90 points. To pass, candidates must achieve at least 30 points overall. Admission is granted to those with the highest scores, with the faculty determining the total number of accepted students and the final minimum threshold based on capacity.

For the purposes of the selection process, candidates are ranked according to the total score achieved across all three sections.

The questions are designed at the level of secondary school education, allowing applicants to prepare thoroughly and confidently for the exam.

The passing score is 30 out of 90 points.

Please note: The exam on 18 August in Ostrava is the final opportunity to take the entrance exam for the 2026/2027 academic year.

Students who wish to transfer from another university should plan to take the exam as early as possible, as additional time is needed to submit applications for subject recognition and credit transfers. Each candidate can take the entrance exam only once per year.

The fee for taking the medical entrance exam is €80.
