Information about Medical University of Bialystok

1. general informations

The origins of hospital care in Białystok date back to the 17th century, when the Wiesiołowski family operated the first parish asylum. In the 18th century, under the Branicki family, local healthcare expanded: the parish hospital was upgraded, a Sisters of Mercy convent with an infirmary was founded, and a hospital serving the Jewish district was established under the religious community. In 1790, Izabella Poniatowska opened a School for Midwives in the Branicki Palace—later the Midwifery Institute—led by Dr. Jakub Feliks de Michelis, one of the earliest institutions training midwives in Polish lands.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, municipal services were consolidated into St. Roch Hospital, and during World War I the Branicki Palace repeatedly served as a field hospital. On January 1, 1950, the Medical Academy in Białystok (MAB) was founded with its seat in the restored Palace—marking the start of a modern campus, the construction of Collegium Universum, clinical hospitals, and rapid growth of staff and research infrastructure. The 1950s–60s brought the academy’s first scientific journals, the first honorary doctorate (1960), the opening of the large State Teaching Hospital (1962), and, in 1969, the launch of dentistry.

Subsequent decades added key facilities: Collegium Pathologicum (1982), the long-term project of the University Children’s Clinical Hospital completed in 2003, and the restoration of the Palace’s ceremonial interiors (1990, 2004–2007). In 2004 the English Division opened, accelerating internationalization. In 2008 MAB became the Medical University of Bialystok (MUB), which further sped up the creation of research centers and specialized laboratories.

Between 2010 and 2018, MUB established state-of-the-art hubs: the GLP-certified Experimental Medicine Center, a KNOW-awarded Innovative Research Center, the Euroregional Pharmacy Center, Clinical Research Center, and the Molecular Imaging Laboratory with a PET/MR scanner. After 2020, the university emerged as a national leader in large-scale studies, AI in medicine, biobanking, and cohort projects (e.g., Białystok Plus). It posted notable ranking advances (Perspektywy AWANS 2024, strong Times Higher Education results, entry into the Shanghai ranking in two fields) and record citation and impact metrics.

3. exams & enrollment dates

To apply for the General Medicine  program at Medical University of Bialystok, candidates must have completed secondary school.

🟢 Admission Requirements – 6-Year English-Language MD Program

The 6-year MD program is designed for high school graduates who meet one of the following conditions:

  • Hold a High School Leaving Certificate confirming the right to apply for admission to a university or institution of higher education. The certificate must include passing grades in at least two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics,
    or

  • Have passed the Matura Exam (High School Final Exam) in at least two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics.

Each applicant is responsible for providing official proof of eligibility for admission. Candidates are accepted based on their position on the ranking list, determined by the total number of points obtained in two parts of the admission process:

Part I – Academic Record Evaluation

Points are calculated from the grades listed on the candidate’s official high school transcript / diploma and, if requested, from other academic certificates (such as SAT II subject exams or university-level courses).
Grades are converted using the university’s internal evaluation system, based on publicly available information provided by the high school or the Ministry of Education in the candidate’s home country.

The minimum required score after conversion is 100 points.
Two grades from the following subjects are considered for evaluation: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics.

If the applicant is still in their final year of high school, they must submit an official transcript showing mid-year grades or expected final results issued by school authorities. After receiving the final diploma, the candidate is required to provide it to the university.

If the maximum number of available seats is not filled, the university may open an additional recruitment round with a lower point threshold.

Part II – Interview

Candidates are awarded up to 100 points based on an interview evaluating their knowledge of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as their English language proficiency in the context of medical studies and the medical profession.

The interview may be conducted online, provided that all required documents are submitted and the application fee is paid.

Note: Admission decisions are based on the ranking list, which combines points from both the academic evaluation and the interview.

🟢 Students who wish to transfer from another university should plan to take the exam as early as possible.

Each candidate can take the entrance exam for their chosen program only once per year.

The fee for taking the medical entrance exam is €200 or 220$.

🟢 Interview – Admission Process for the 6-Year MD Program

1. When: The interview takes place after the candidate completes the online registration and the application is positively verified. To participate, applicants must pay an admission fee of 200 EUR (see the Tuition and Fees section for details).

Please note: The interview will only be scheduled once all required documents have been submitted.

Interviews are conducted online via the ZOOM platform.

🟢 1. APPLICATION FORM

The application form should be downloaded from the Online Recruitment System. First, you must register in the system and complete your application. Your school leaving certificate must include at least two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Physics, or Mathematics. All documents must be presented as originals or certified true copies with legalization or an Apostille stamp.

Apostille: If your diploma was issued by a school operating in a country that is a party to the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961, you must provide an Apostille issued by the competent authority of that country.

The Apostille may be placed directly on the original certificate, its duplicate, or on a notarized copy.
Valid list of Convention member countries: www.hcch.net

Legalization: If your certificate was issued by a school operating in a country that is not a party to the Hague Convention, you must submit the original or a duplicate legalized by:

  • a diplomatic representation accredited in Poland or another EU, EFTA (EEA), or OECD member state.

Usually, documents must be pre-authenticated by the local competent authority (e.g., Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Ministry of Justice) before submission to the Polish consulate. The consul will not legalize documents without prior superlegalization.

Important: If you graduated from a school following, for example, the British national curriculum (A-level certificate) but located in another country (e.g., Tanzania), you must obtain an Apostille from the United Kingdom. Similarly, if you graduated from a school following the Indian curriculum but located in the UAE, you must obtain an Apostille from India – not a legalization from the UAE.

🟢 3. ELIGIBILITY DECLARATION (if your School Leaving Certificate does not state that it entitles you to apply for higher education).

This document must clearly confirm that your certificate (School Leaving Certificate / High School Diploma) entitles you to apply for admission to a university or any higher education institution in the country where it was issued.

It must be completed and certified (signature and official seal) by:

  • the higher educational authorities of your country (e.g., Ministry of Education), or

  • your country’s diplomatic mission in Poland.

This document does not apply if your school certificate already contains such a statement.
